2020 Artist in Focus – Chris Blake

Chris is a self-taught artist best known for his vibrant pastels and oils. Chris came to Australia in his mid-teens. His wish as a school student was to be an art teacher, however he found his freedom as a lone migrant in outback Queensland. His love for art was initially expressed through drawing. Chris’s philosophy always was that a good drawing is the backbone of good art.

In time Chris left the bush, but the bush never really left him. Chris’s drawings became sketches to amuse his children. Then for a Christmas present in 1977 his wife bought him all the things that he needed to paint in oils – easel, paints, brushes, canvas, and a palette.

A move back to Queensland in 1990 saw Chris to build a house and joining the newly formed learning co-op being run by Caloundra library. He was their first art tutor and so began his life’s dream of being an art teacher, a role in which he not only reveled in but was much appreciated by his students.

Since then Chris has become a well know artist on the Sunshine Coast. Winning numerous awards as well as a reputation as a respected art judge. He was awarded the title of Master Pastellist in 2004 with the pastel society of Australia. Mostly known for his pastel and oil workshops he is a popular, interesting tutor who is much enjoyed for his humour and for giving all.
